The rarities of Pokémon cards and their symbols

Circle, diamond, black, silver or gold stars: how to read the rarity symbol of a Pokémon card.

Updated on 29.09.2026 · 2 min read

Each Pokémon card features a rarity symbol at the bottom of the card, next to its number. This symbol indicates whether the card is common or not in boosters.

Symbols of Recent Expansions

Since the Scarlet and Violet series, the symbols are as follows:

Symbol Rarity
Circle Common
Diamond Uncommon
One black star Rare
Two black stars Double rare
Two silver stars Ultra rare
One gold star Illustration rare
Two gold stars Special illustration rare
Three gold stars Hyper rare

Some special expansions have other rarities, such as Shiny cards or ACE SPEC cards.

Secret Cards

If a card's number exceeds the number of cards in the expansion, for example, 201/198, it is a secret card. Secret cards are often the most sought after: full art illustrations, gold cards, alternative versions.

Rarity and Variant

The same card can exist in multiple variants:

  • Normal normal;
  • Reverse reverse: the entire card shines, except the illustration;
  • Holographic holographic: only the illustration shines.

The variant and the rarity are two different pieces of information. In the BDPokéCards catalogue, you can filter by rarity and by variant.

Rarity and Price

A rare card is not necessarily expensive. A rare card of a highly sought-after Pokémon can be worth more than an ultra-rare card of a less sought-after Pokémon. The condition, language, and demand also matter. To find out the price of a card, check its value and the price of its latest sales.
